Five Things on Friday

Five on Friday: February 5th

Not much going on here but a whole lot of rewriting, about which I hope to have a post soon.

Lieutenant in slightly tubbier days.
Lieutenant in slightly tubbier days.

What I’m Watching: Madame Secretary (created by Barbara Hall, who seems to be a creative machine, and oh hey, we share a birthday) and American Idol. I know, dorky. But it is the last season. Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m a fan of AI, but even more so of The Voice. Dean Wesley Smith maintains that watching The Voice is one of the best ways to understand what it takes to make it in a creative field, and I agree.

Who’s sleeping beside me as I write: My cat, Lieutenant.  His brother, Captain, is prowling the kitchen for food. Or plastic bags. Captain loves him some plastic bags.

What I’m interested in: Suddenly I can’t get enough of the presidential race. I’m fascinated with the interplay, if that’s what we’d call it, between Hilary and Bernie. As for the Republicans, well, buffoons.

What I’m reading: Fates and Furies, still. It is not a quick read. I’ll likely finish it tonight. And then I have a huge stack of books from the library to peruse.

What my favorite dinner was this week: Acorn squash stuffed with ground lamb, onion, sage, thyme and fennel, shared with my daughter and her family who ended up spending the night here, baby in tow, when the power went out at their house.

And that’s it, that’s all I’ve got.  What’s up with you?

I love American Idol, too. And truth be known I also love Dancing With The Stars, which usually interferes with The Voice for me. I’ve become a bit of a political junkie, and when I can keep from becoming outraged I do get a kick out of the show. Aren’t cats the best companions for writing! My Bella and Rudy take their positions in their cat tower and make cooing and happy purrs to help me work. I love reading about your week!

Oh, I’m so glad I’m not the only American Idol fan! Truth be told, though I think I like The Voice better–I just really enjoy watching the stars coach the contestants to be better. (And that’s likely similar to Dancing with the Stars.) Yeah, it is VERY hard not to be constantly outraged watching politics–and that was why I always tended to ignore them. But now maybe I’m starting to feel some hope again. And cats–yes! They are the best.

I loved Adelle Davis. You are what you eat: She used that phrase often, borrowed it from Anthelm Brillat-Savarin. (Yes, I looked it up.) Her message isn’t always true. I love lamb. And your description of it piled nicely into a squash set off my bells. I clicked on the link and read the recipe. Lo and behold, in the list of ingredients, I only find bull. Actually, it was beef but close enough. What happened! This doesn’t sound like a mistake by the butcher. Was dessert pecan (sunflower seed) pie?

Oh yeah, I should have pointed that out–I substituted lamb for the beef, because I have a freezer full of it (we went in on buying a lamb with my daughter). But the recipe was so good (those spices!) it would work with anything, even ground turkey or chicken. And I loved Adele Davis. Eat Right to Keep Fit! My sister and I devoured that book. Fascinating where that quote came from…

Hate to say it Charolette but if a “buffoon” doesn’t win the presidential race, we’re ALL screwed. If Clinton wins I’m running and hiding forever. Forget moving to another state. I’ll have to choose another country! Funny how this race is really peeling away at all the errors from the current presidency.

Will you still love me if we disagree politically? Because what you said about Clinton is how I feel about Trump winning! Ah but we can all agree about our writing, right?

I never said I wanted Trump in office!! 😉 Okay, maybe there is ONE buffoon!!

Ha! At least we can agree politically on one thing!
